A Commission by Sheila Tso featuring Collector-Grade Blackjack Turquoise

Every once in a while a piece comes across my desk that makes me stop talking for a second.

Not because it’s flashy. Not because it’s huge. But because the stone is so absurdly good that everything else fades into the background.

This commissioned necklace by acclaimed Navajo artist Sheila Tso was built around one of the finest pieces of Blackjack Turquoise I’ve ever handled. The jet-black host rock is split by vivid rivers of electric blue-green turquoise with flashes of warm bronze matrix—almost like watching lightning tear across a midnight desert sky.

You don’t commission a piece around an average stone.

You commission one around this.

Rather than overpowering the turquoise, Sheila Tso created a beautifully balanced sterling silver setting with delicate hand-fabricated details and elegant drop accents that frame the stone without stealing the spotlight. It’s the kind of restraint that separates truly great artists from merely talented ones.

Why Collectors Love It

Blackjack Turquoise has earned legendary status because the very best examples possess almost impossible contrast—inky black host rock interrupted by vivid turquoise veins that seem to glow from within. High-grade material like this rarely makes it into the market today, and when it does, it’s usually in the hands of artists creating one-of-a-kind commissions rather than production work.

That distinction matters.

This isn’t a design built first with stones selected afterward. The stone was the entire reason this necklace exists.

Eric’s Note

I’ve handled a lot of incredible turquoise over the years, and every once in a while a stone reminds me why I started chasing this stuff in the first place.

The best treasures don’t shout. They quietly pull you across the room until you’re standing there wondering how a rock formed millions of years ago can still make your heart race.

This is one of those stones.

And honestly… if I had commissioned a necklace around material this good, I don’t think I’d ever let it leave my collection.
