Some jewelry feels as though it was made at a bench. Pieces like this feel as though they were assembled over a lifetime—each material collected from a different landscape, each color carrying a different memory until, one day, they finally found one another.

Created by celebrated Navajo silversmith John Vigil, this remarkable vintage necklace is a beautiful expression of balance between boldness and restraint. At its heart sits a sculptural sterling silver pendant, where vivid Mediterranean branch coral winds naturally between glowing turquoise cabochons and a smooth white shell centerpiece. Rather than forcing symmetry, Vigil lets the natural forms guide the composition, allowing every stone and coral branch to retain its own character.

The necklace continues that story with alternating sterling silver beads, turquoise nuggets, Mediterranean coral, and white shell spacers, creating a rhythm that feels effortless. It isn’t flashy—it simply feels authentic, the kind of piece that grows more compelling the longer you study it.

John Vigil’s work is admired for honoring traditional Navajo materials while embracing an organic, almost architectural approach to design. This necklace embodies that philosophy beautifully. It feels less like jewelry and more like a landscape rendered in silver—desert sky, red canyon walls, ancient seas, and weathered stone all gathered into one wearable work of art.

It’s the sort of necklace that doesn’t chase attention. It earns it.

Eric’s Notes from the Field

John Vigil always seems to understand when to stop. There isn’t an extra stone here that doesn’t belong. The coral branches still look alive, the turquoise has that wonderful older color collectors love, and the shell softens everything just enough. It’s bold without being loud, which is honestly a pretty hard trick to pull off. This is exactly the kind of vintage Navajo necklace that gets better every time you wear it.
